Kelly Nyhof, 2014 CCAA Women's Volleyball Player of the Year
The Humber Hawks' Kelly Nyhof is the 2014 CCAA Women's Volleyball Player of the Year.
"Kelly has the resume of record. This is her pinnacle season, and it's the culmination of a great collegiate career," says Scott Gray, CCAA women's volleyball convenor.
Nyhof is a three-time CCAA All-Canadian, three-time OCAA (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association) Player of the Year, the OCAA's overall scoring champion for the second consecutive season, and represented Canada at the World University Games in Russia.
The team captain led the Humber Hawks to a perfect 18-0 record and their seventh consecutive OCAA provincial title. They’re seeded fourth in the national championship.
Other nominees were Leanna Gildersleeve of the VIU Mariners, Meaghan MacDougall of the MSVU Mystics, Clémence Provost-Lussier of the Édouard Montpetit Lynx, and Elly Wendel of the Briercrest Clippers.
Nyhof received the award Wednesday, March 5 at the CCAA national championship awards banquet at the 2014 CCAA Women's Volleyball National Championship in Toronto, Ont. Player of the Year winners receive a customized CCAA ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA Championship Awards Banquet.
Derrick Brooks is 2014 CCAA Women's Volleyball Coach of the Year
Derrick Brooks, head coach of the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics, is the 2014 CCAA Women's Volleyball Coach of the Year. It's the first time since 2005 the award has gone to a coach competing in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association.
"MSVU has always been tops in the ACAA, but they're continually improving and they seem a bit different this year," says Scott Gray, CCAA women's volleyball convenor "It's a testament to Derrick's contribution to the program. He's done a great job."
The Mystics have earned back-to-back undefeated records (18-0) in the ACAA regular season, as well as bronze at the 2013 Humber Cup and gold at the 2014 Coupe de l'est. They capped if off wtth the ACAA provincial title and are seeded seventh in the national championship.
Brooks monitors his athletes' academics, founded a local club team and is working towards his NCCP level three certification.
The other nominees were Shane Hyde of the VIU Mariners, Danyk Sauro of the Lionel-Groulx Nordiques, Doug Veldman of the Redeemer Royals and Nolan Weinmaster of the Briercrest Clippers.
